Katherine – Strategic Partnerships Director

The Octane team prides itself on delivering an outstanding experience for customers, dealers and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) partners. We sat down with Katherine Curiel, Strategic Partnerships Director, to find out what she had to say about life at the fast-growing fintech.

Why did you join Octane?

Octane stood out because it’s a technology company in an industry that is ready for change; the powersport finance market has not modernized as quickly as the mortgage and auto finance markets, for example. We have a challenging opportunity to bring technology to our dealers, manufacturing partners, and customers.

I had good conversations during the interview process and thought it would be a great team to join. My role was new and I had the opportunity to define it. In the beginning, I supported our partners with reporting and making sure they were satisfied with our product and partnership. I’ve since broadened my role’s scope and taken on the project management of requests originating from OEMs. For example, when a partner asked us to finance a new product, I led the project from origination to launch.

What do we do better than anyone else?

We prioritize customer service, whether that’s making sure deals get done on time or being there for our dealers and partners. In my role, I manage our relationship with our manufacturing partners and advocate for them internally as much as I can. Our partners and dealers are always top of mind.

How would you describe Octane’s culture?

As a rapidly growing fintech startup, our culture is collaborative. We’re trying to solve big problems so there’s a lot of critical thinking involved and a need to work together.

We’re results-oriented, which means we’re flexible and work quickly. We test and iterate a lot, which means our products continue to improve and evolve. Since I joined we’ve launched numerous product features and a direct to consumer offering, which will enable our own growth and that of our industry.

The people are really friendly and transparent. That’s an important part of what makes us Octane. The people are great to work with and willing to help you out, even if you haven’t worked together in the past.

Octane also gives employees a gift each month, which is a cool way of bringing the team together at a time when we’re all working from home. For instance, we received an assortment of cooking spices from Omsom to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month.

What inspires you about working at Octane?

The fact that we’re growing so fast means there are many opportunities, both for the company as a whole and employees individually. The growth also means people can progress and develop their careers within Octane; I’ve seen people move across different teams. There’s a lot of opportunity to try out new areas and gain new skills.

Onaisa – VP of Marketing

Octane operates in markets where the growth potential is enormous, which means there’s tremendous opportunity for marketers. We sat down with Onaisa Landis, VP of Marketing, to hear her experience at the fast-growing fintech startup.

How would you describe Octane?

We move fast. We’re hungry for innovation and ideas. You can write your own storyline. You never know what tomorrow will bring.

Why did you choose Octane?

I had grown up in Fortune 500 Corporate America and was hungering for a more entrepreneurial setup, organization, and environment where I could help form the organizational identity rather than conform to the organizational identity. I also wanted to work somewhere that prioritized speed to market above all else.

It was also very clear to me that Octane had a bright future ahead and it was very exciting to be part of an organization where the growth potential was unlimited and I could be a part of it.

What has your experience at Octane been like so far?

It’s been empowering. When I joined, the marketing team was still establishing its role in driving Octane’s growth so it felt like the perfect time to step in and help shape that direction. The organization was welcoming to a marketing leader and hungry to showcase the many things it does that sets it apart, both as a service provider but also as an employer.

It’s been inspiring to determine what the future of marketing will look like, unleash our market potential, and shape our brand. And the journey has only just begun.

What do you like best about working at Octane?

The ability to solve problems every day. Everyone feels equally invested in Octane’s growth and success, which results in tremendous cross-functional partnership and people at all levels of the company feeling empowered to share their ideas to drive organizational growth.

What do we do better than anyone else?

We are incredibly nimble and effective at pivoting based on what the market is telling us. Our ability to be opportunistic and evolve our strategy based on what is and is not working has driven our success to date, and I have no doubt will continue to drive our success into the future.

John – Staff Engineer

Octane is revolutionizing the buying process for major recreational purchases with digital products and solutions. We recently spoke with John Yook, Staff Engineer, to get his view on working at this fast growing startup.

What sets Octane apart from other startups?

The business itself. We’re still a startup but a startup with one foot on very solid ground. That’s pretty rare. Startups are often struggling to survive, or if they establish themselves, it’s not easy to find a stable startup that still has a realistic and achievable path to be something much larger with high chances of success. The way people shop and obtain credit is changing, so there’s a lot of opportunity for Octane going forward and, subsequently, a lot of scope for personal and career growth for their team.

What makes Octane unique?

A few super sharp founders correctly identified a niche where it was possible to build the tech with the resources of a startup, compete and be successful. This approach has been the greatest advantage thus far, founders that went after this opportunity and built a working solution and legit IP for the automated decision of loans. It makes it hard for people following us to build the tech and solve these problems from scratch.

Also, the people here are pretty nice. I’m glad I get to spend my time working with interesting, smart, competent people that I enjoy seeing every day.

Why did you choose Octane?

The technical problems I would be working on sounded interesting so I thought Octane would be the right place to learn, get experience and grow. Also the people I met during the interview were absolutely fascinating. One of the co-founders interviewed me. He was CTO before but he demoted himself when Octane grew. Typically founders in that position would demote themselves to Director or Senior VP. He demoted himself to Engineer, which shows a low ego and a good life mentor. I wanted the opportunity to learn from and work with someone like that.
